ABOUT ME
My name is Gisele Christian Velez Espada de Conn. My art is a reflection and an expression of prayer, worship, and my multi-cultural life.
I am a Puerto Rican woman raised in both New York and Puerto Rico. My work and studies have taken me to Barcelona, Cuernavaca, Los Angeles, New York, Washington D.C., Costa Rica, and San Juan. I am an artist, designer, and teacher. I teach Art and Spanish in a middle school in Highlands Ranch, Colorado. As most of my fellow artists, my interests and subject matters have varied throughout my career. One of my passions is teaching creativity to young students...encouraging them to explore and have the courage to express their ideas. This is something that I too am constantly working on. My latest fascination is with the genre of Magical Realism and telling a visual story in an interesting way. I believe that our stories are the essence of how we become who we are...we all have one and I am learning how to tell mine.

MY WORK
|
The creative process
My work begins in my heart, with prayer to my Lord and Savior - then develops in my intellect - I am inspired by the beauty of creation and dichotomies of life and our stories. I am a perfectionist and I treasure purity of expression - this is a dichotomy that I wrestle with and is an important part of my work. It is part of my story, my work, and my life. My medium of choice depends on the creative expression I am drawn to. I may choose watercolor because of the delicate glazes, the strong colors, and the magical light that one can achieve with it. Oil is a delicious yet pernicious encounter, as it never tells me when to stop painting. Charcoal and pencil were my first loves - nothing can replace drawing. My modern day crush is certainly acrylics and all mediums created to manipulate and create texture and chemical reactions.
